Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a device which emits blue light in the range of wavelength 430 nm to 490 nm. This blue light acts as an accelerator for the oxidizing agent hydrogen peroxide when applied to discoloured teeth. Thus teeth Whitening is a bleaching process that lightens discolorations of tooth enamel. Various studies have shown that using a light in the visible blue light spectrum results in the greatest whiteness level achieved as opposed to using other visible or invisible wavelengths. Strong blue light emitted by LED also shortens the duration of contact of hydrogen peroxide with teeth enamel thereby decreasing the incidence of sensitivity after the procedure.
What is the procedure like?
We use a custom made whitening tray loaded with bleaching gel that is placed into the mouth to carry the gel and keep it held in constant contact with the outer surface of the teeth. The teeth are exposed to LED light for 15-20 minutes when the procedure is complete.

What are the side effects?
Some people experience teeth sensitivity during or after the treatment. This usually resolves in 1-3 days. Teeth sensitivity is lowered by the short duration contact with bleaching agent since blue LED light accelerates the whitening process.
How many treatments are required and how long the effect may last?
The number of treatments required may vary from 2-6 and the effects usually last 3-6 months. The effects may last longer depending on oral hygiene and food habits.
